Jewelry

We have a significant collection of jewelry and metalwork, both antique and newer pieces. Most of our articles in this category are made by the Kazak, Turkman or Pashtoon (Kuchi) tribes of Afghanistan and nearby areas. Large jewelry items such as the crowns, breastplates and pendants were part of a bridal dowry handed down from generation to generation. Most of the finest of these pieces have disappeared from the market. We are fortunate to have some very fine examples of these in our collections.

We also have an extensive selection of cuff bracelets, necklaces, earrings, belts, metal beads and head coverings. Our inventory of these is constantly changing. Bookmark our site to keep abreast of our new additions.

Metalwork techniques are similar in the jewelry and other metalwork items. The finest pieces are generally made from silver. Designs may be chased, applied, inlaid with stone or glass, and hammered or cast. They are then often decorated with a fine gold coating. The Turkman and Kazak jewelry are renowned for this type of work. Motifs are mainly geometric and floral. The Pashtoon work features a lot of animals in the decoration.

The newer and less elaborate pieces are usually made from nickel silver alloys. These generally do not have the gold wash type of decoration.
