Rugs

The vast collection of our had woven rugs and kilims are an important part of our inventory. They represent the typical and more unusual motifs of Baluch, Uzbek, Turkman and Tymani tribes of Afghanistan. Each rug is unique, a work of art in its own right. The workmanship and historical significance of these items grow as time goes on. Slowly the craftsmanship needed to produce them is being lost.

The carpets are created on looms with warp and weft of either cotton or wool. The knots may be either wool or silk. Most of our rugs, sumak and kilims are early to mid 20th century, from the Uzbek, Turkman, Baluch or Tymani tribes of Afghanistan. Most of the Baluchi pieces date to around the 1980’s.

The kilims (Flatweave or Tapestry Weave) are made of both wool and cotton. The Sumak rugs are a combination of knotted, flatweave and braided techniques. Each tribal group has distinctive style, color combination and motifs. The majority of these are geometric, floral patterns, sometimes including animals. The now famous war rugs depict all kinds of military hardware, planes, tanks and the like. Each rug is a one of a kind design.
