Our textiles illustrate several very important and distinctive techniques. They include elaborate embroidery, needlework and beadwork done on woven fabric. These techniques are often combined in a myriad of items used in daily life or treasured as heirlooms. These include wall hangings, table covers, scarves, pillow covers, hats, articles of clothing and more. The majority of the items in our collection are many years old, some as old as the early 20th century. Most were created by tribes in the Uzbek and Kuhistan areas of Afghanistan and surrounding areas.
Vegetable dyes are the source of the vibrant colors in most of the pieces. Small glass seed beads and mirrors are worked into many of the pieces and then surrounded by embroidery or fabric pieced together in decorative shapes and then sewn into larger items. Designs are also stamped on fabric with wooden stamps. Cotton and wool are both used extensively.
